**Course Syllabus Mrs. Penny Jessup**

The purpose of this Honors course is to prepare you for further study in Honors Math 3 with an eye toward Pre-calculus, AP Calculus and also perhaps AP Statistics. It is our sincere hope to prepare you for college level work during high school career, thus maximizing your mathematical skills while minimizing any need for remediation when attending the college of your choice. Being in any Honors class is a privilege and you must work hard to maintain the right to remain in further Honors math courses.

**COURSE DESCRIPTION**:

This class is designed to make mathematics more meaningful to more students. This class follows Integrated Math I and you will work with other students and with your calculator to help you make sense of math problems. As students in this class, you will be engaged in small groups to develop your ability to deal with and find commonality in other students’ diverse ideas.

**GRADING**:

__NEW____9 weeks Grading Scale__: A: 100-90% B: 89-80% C: 79-70% D: 69-60% F: 59% & Below

__Class Grade Calculation each 9 weeks__: Homework/Classwork=15% Quizzes=25% Tests=60%

__Final Exam__:

- At this time final exams count 20% toward the final grade issued in the class. I will follow Stokes County Board policy regarding this percentage.
- EXEMPTIONS maybe earned such that you are not required to take the final. Please be advised absences WILL strongly be considered in this decision! So, please don't miss any more than you need to!
- At this time there is a chance we may have to administer a NC Final Exam provided by the state. If so, then all students will take the Final Exam and NO student will be allowed to be exempt!

**FINAL GRADE CALCULATION:**

**40% Quarter 3 + 40% Quarter 4 + 20% Final Exam = YOUR FINAL OVERALL AVERAGE**

**ABSENCES/MAKE-UP WORK**:

- Absenteeism is especially difficult to overcome.
.__The responsibility lies in your hands to obtain assignments and to complete make-up work following an excused absence__- I will place work you missed and assignments in a MISSED WORK folder in the front of the room with your name on it. You simply go and find it in the folder following an absence.
**Class time can’t be used to catch you up**. That’s tough, but that’s the way it is. You can see Mrs. Jessup during her tutoring times at Smart Breakfast almost daily for catching up on missed concepts. Failure to make up missed work will result in a loss of 5 points from the homework average.

**TEST 60% :**

__Sorry, but Test Corrections are NOT offered in any Honors or AP mathematics course!__- We expect you to be prepared the first time you take the exam. Extra help is always available. JUST ASK
__before__you take a test!

**QUIZZES 25%**:

At the end of the grading period, I will DROP your lowest QUIZ grade.

__Homework Policy__:

**HOMEWORK 15%:**

- Homework is vital to learning mathematics.
- I will check your homework to make sure you have made a
*valid, honest attempt*to answer*every question*. I will not necessarily be looking for it to be perfect or correct every time, but you must complete*every problem*to be given full credit for the homework. - Sometimes homework will be collected, sometimes I will check it at your desk during warm-up time.
- I will go over homework and answer any of your questions so that you may correct your work.
- Late homework may or may not be accepted! Please do homework each night after it has been assigned so that you don’t get behind!

**CHEATING**:

Any student(s) caught cheating will receive a 0 on the assignment, quiz or test. This includes, but is not limited to, copying homework, discussing an unfinished test or quiz, or looking at someone else’s paper during a test or quiz. All parties involved will receive 0’s and parents will be contacted. (It’s not worth it!!)

**TUTORING**:

The 2nd and 3rd Wednesdays, every Thursday, and every Friday – 8:10 – 8:35 during Smart Breakfast. Use this time for homework help, completing homework/class work, and may be used to makeup quizzes/tests due to absences. I am also available most afternoons if you will arrange for that in advance.

**QUESTIONS**:

If at any time your parents would like to talk to me, my planning period is 4th period between hours of 1:50 – 3:20 each day so they can call 994-2995 this semester. If that time isn’t convenient, they may call and leave a message for me and I will gladly return their call. I’m also available on e-mail at penny.jessup@stokes.k12.nc.us.

**MATH FEE**:

$5 fee is required of ALL students. Fees are to be paid in the office.
